Understanding SMS & Multi-Layer Technology

At R+F, “Multi-Layer” means more than just stacking materials. It is the strategic lamination of functional layers to create a high-performance “sandwich” structure.

What is SMS?

SMS stands for Spunbond + Meltblown + Spunbond.

  1. Spunbond (Outer Layers): These layers provide the “skeleton.” They offer high tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and protect the delicate inner core.
  2. Meltblown (Inner Core): This is the “heart” of the filter. These ultra-fine fibers create a dense web that captures even the smallest sub-micron particles.
    The result: A filter medium that is as tough as a Spunbond but as efficient as a Meltblown.

The Multi-Layer Advantage:

Single-layer media often face a trade-off: if they are strong, they aren’t efficient; if they are efficient, they are fragile. Our Composite Series breaks this compromise:

  • Gradient Density: We can combine layers with different pore sizes to create a “depth filter” effect, significantly increasing the Dust Holding Capacity (DHC).
  • Functional Integration: We can laminate specialized layers, such as activated carbon for odor removal or hydrophobic membranes for water separation, directly into the composite.
  • Pleatability: Multi-layer structures provide the necessary stiffness for high-speed pleating processes without damaging the fine filter fibers.
